Ibadan-based Veteran Gospel singer and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Gospel Musician Association of Nigeria (GOMAN), Funmi Aragbaye has criticized popular gospel singer Tope Alabi for the controversial use of ‘aboru aboye,’ a term commonly associated with Ifa worshippers, in one of her songs.

The controversy surrounding Tope Alabi’s viral video, where she sang using Yoruba words associated with greetings by Ifa worshippers, has sparked a conversation within the gospel music community. Funmi Aragbaye, in an exclusive phone chat with Punch correspondent, expressed her disappointment in Tope Alabi’s actions and stated that the singer believes she is above everyone, including God.

According to Aragbaye, Tope Alabi is not a member of GOMAN or any other gospel association. She perceives herself as being too important to be part of such organizations and considers herself independent from any affiliation. Aragbaye further explained that Alabi’s behavior is a reflection of the current state of the country, where many people take God for granted and worship Him superficially without genuine devotion. Aragbaye also mentioned that Pastor Bola Are shares the same sentiments. She believes that many preachers today lack a true understanding of what they are preaching and have emerged onto the scene without a solid foundation
