Super Falcons of Nigeria Crash Out of Paris Olympics Without a Win After 3-1 Loss to Japan

Written by Oryiman David Mson

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been eliminated from the 2024 Paris Olympics after a 3-1 defeat to Japan, marking their third consecutive loss in the tournament.

Having lost their opening games against Brazil and Spain, the Super Falcons needed a win in Wednesday’s match to keep their hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals alive. Unfortunately, Japan took an early lead with Hamano Maika scoring the first goal, followed by Tanako Maina’s free-kick in the 32nd minute, which beat Nigeria’s goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Although Jennifer Echegini scored to give Nigeria a glimmer of hope, Japan sealed their victory with a third goal by Hikaru Kitagawa. The loss left Nigeria winless in the group stage, leading to their exit from the competition.

Japan finished as the runner-up in Group B, two points behind the World Champions, Spain, who secured a 2-0 victory over Brazil.
