Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Bologna and Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee for a fee of £36.5 million. The 23-year-old Holland international has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, extending until June 2029, with an option for an additional year.
Rather than triggering the £34.5 million release clause in Zirkzee’s contract, United chose to pay an extra £2 million to spread the cost over three years. This strategic move marks Zirkzee as United’s first signing of the summer, following his participation with Holland at Euro 2024.
Zirkzee is expected to bolster United’s attacking options, providing competition and support for Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund. Speaking about his transfer, Zirkzee expressed his enthusiasm: “Having had discussions with the manager and the leaders of the club I know how exciting the future is going to be here and I cannot wait to play my part in achieving success for Manchester United.”
Zirkzee, who has just passed a medical and is currently on holiday, added, “I am a player who has always dedicated everything to winning; I’m ready for this next challenge, to go to another level in my career and win more trophies. It is a privilege to join such an iconic club.”
United’s new sporting director, Dan Ashworth, welcomed his first signing since joining the club. Ashworth highlighted the importance of enhancing United’s attacking options: “Securing a forward to enhance our already strong group of attacking players was a key aim for this summer. We are delighted that we’ve managed to sign a player of Joshua’s calibre this early in the transfer window.”
Ashworth further praised Zirkzee’s potential: “Joshua is an outstanding talent who is ready to make an impact for Manchester United. His ability and desire to grow into a world-class player means that he will be a great addition to the squad that we are building for the exciting season ahead and beyond.”
United remain active in the transfer market, with plans to secure two centre-backs and a defensive midfielder as they continue to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
