Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament Goes International, Set to Begin on October 2

Written by Oryiman David Mson

The Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) is expanding its reach by including international teams for the first time in its fourth edition, scheduled to take place from October 2 to 13, 2024, in Benin City, Edo State. This year’s tournament will feature 14 teams, including two from Benin Republic—Espoir FC de Cotonou and Aigle Royal d’Adjara—alongside top Nigerian teams like Edo Queens FC and Rivers Angels FC.

Initiated by Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, the wife of the Edo State Governor, the tournament aims to empower young girls and boost grassroots sports development in Edo State and across Nigeria. The event has grown significantly since its inception in 2020, helping to position female footballers on the global stage, with many participants going on to represent Nigeria internationally.

The tournament boasts a prize pool of N32.5 million, with the winning team set to take home N10 million. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd runners-up will receive N7 million, N5 million, and N3 million, respectively. Additionally, each of the remaining 10 teams will be awarded N75,000 as a consolation prize.
