Renowned footballer Angel Di Maria has announced that he will retire from international football following the final of the 2024 Copa America.
Di Maria has had a storied career with the Argentina national team, scoring the decisive goal in their 1-0 victory over Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final. He also netted a crucial goal in the 2022 World Cup final against France, a match that Argentina won via a penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw in regulation time.
Di Maria made his debut for Argentina on September 6, 2008, in a match against Paraguay and was a key player in Diego Maradona’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He played in all five of Argentina’s matches in that tournament, helping them reach the quarter-finals.
Throughout his international career, Di Maria has been instrumental in many of Argentina’s successes. He scored his first international goal in a 5-0 friendly win over Canada. The former Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Manchester United player recently helped Argentina secure a spot in the Copa America final with a 2-0 victory over Canada in the semi-finals.
Speaking after the semi-final victory, Di Maria confirmed his decision to retire from international football after the Copa America final. “I’m not ready for my last game with the national team, but it’s time,” the 36-year-old said. “Whatever happens in the final, I think I can leave through the front door—I gave everything.”
