A 40-year-old woman, Stella Godwin, found herself in serious legal trouble as she was arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday over allegations of fraud amounting to N1.23 million. Godwin, who resides in Old Kamazo, Kaduna, was charged with fraud but pleaded not guilty to the offense.
Inspector Chidi Leo, the Prosecutor, informed the court that the offense took place between January and August in the Sabon Tasha area of Kaduna. According to Leo, Godwin, who was employed by Grace Multi Dynamic Investment Limited, fraudulently converted N1.23 million of the company’s funds for her personal use. This act contravened Section 241 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, which prescribes a jail term of up to five years for those found guilty of such offenses.
The prosecutor requested the court to grant an adjournment, stating the need to review the case file thoroughly and to prepare the witnesses who will testify against the defendant. The seriousness of the crime, involving a significant amount of money, underscores the need for a thorough examination of the case.
Representing the defendant, Counsel Samson Timothy urged the court to consider granting bail, arguing that his client, Stella Godwin, is not a flight risk and will appear for subsequent court dates. He emphasized her willingness to cooperate with the legal process and assured the court of her readiness to meet any bail conditions set.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail to Stella Godwin in the sum of N200,000, with the requirement of two sureties in like sum. The court stipulated that the sureties must be gainfully employed and provide evidence of three years of tax payments to the Kaduna State Government, ensuring that they have a stable and accountable background. This condition aims to ensure that Godwin remains within the jurisdiction of the court and returns for the trial.
The case has been adjourned to October 9 for a full hearing, where the prosecution is expected to present its evidence and witnesses. The outcome of this trial will be closely watched, as it involves allegations of financial misconduct within an employment context, raising broader questions about trust and integrity in the workplace. If convicted, Godwin could face significant legal consequences, including imprisonment.
