Tricycle Operators Protest Fuel Price Hike in Warri

Written by Oryiman David Mson

On Wednesday, tricycle operators, commonly known as “Keke” riders, staged a protest by blocking Deco Junction in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. The demonstration was sparked by the recent increase in fuel pump prices.

According to reports, NNPC Retail Management has raised the price of petrol from N617 to N897 per litre, effective September 3. This sharp increase has led to widespread discontent among the tricycle operators, who rely heavily on fuel for their daily operations.

The protesters began their march at 6:00 a.m. from Enerhen Junction to Deco Junction, disrupting traffic and business activities in the area. The Deco Junction is a key route connecting Enerhen Junction, Hausa Quarters, and Okumagba Avenue.

To maintain order, heavily armed policemen and officers from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were deployed to the scene. Despite their presence, the protest caused significant disruptions, including severe traffic congestion and halted business operations.

Mr. Omatseye Esijolomi, one of the protesters, criticized the steep rise in fuel prices. He explained that the cost of purchasing petrol from the black market has surged to between N1,400 and N1,500 per litre, which has led to increased transport fares and adversely affected their livelihood. He also highlighted additional financial burdens such as community levies, and payments to police and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) as further challenges.

The protestors are calling on the government to address the issue urgently and alleviate the financial strain caused by the fuel price hike.
