President Bola Tinubu, during his visit to China, addressed Nigerians living in the country, emphasizing the importance of replicating China’s high-quality infrastructure in Nigeria. Speaking at the China World Hotel to members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) and the Nigerian community, Tinubu highlighted the necessity of difficult reforms, including the recent fuel price hike, to drive the nation’s development.
Tinubu acknowledged that while the fuel price increase was a tough decision, it was essential for Nigeria’s growth. “We want our children to attend good schools, not in tattered huts or dilapidated buildings,” he said. He noted that building quality infrastructure like roads, constant electricity, and reliable water supply, similar to what is found in China, requires hard decisions.
He explained that the fuel price hike was part of broader economic reforms aimed at securing a better future for Nigeria. “One economic action leads to another,” Tinubu remarked, emphasizing the need for bold leadership to move the nation forward. He also underscored that achieving progress often requires national consensus and tough decisions, which his administration is prepared to make.
The President praised his team and expressed confidence in their ability to navigate Nigeria through these reforms. Reflecting on his meetings with Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, Tinubu said his discussions centered on strengthening cooperation in infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, and other sectors. He noted that his visit to China had been successful and would lead to further collaboration between the two nations.
Tinubu urged Nigerians in China to continue being good ambassadors, highlighting the importance of discipline, a trait he admired in Chinese society. “Without discipline and commitment, we cannot build a nation that is respected globally,” he said, encouraging Nigerians to reflect their country’s image positively abroad.
During the event, Dr. Oche Barnabas, President of NIDO China, expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s efforts in boosting Nigeria-China relations. Barnabas also requested the President’s support in getting Nigeria officially recognized as a native English-speaking country in China, a move that would unlock more job opportunities for Nigerians.
In response, Tinubu assured that Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BoI) would collaborate with the diaspora community to explore opportunities back home. He also encouraged Nigerians to contribute to national development by sharing their talents and experiences.
President Tinubu concluded by reiterating his commitment to leading Nigeria through necessary reforms, stating, “We must take the hard steps now to pave the way for the future.”
