The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to public tertiary institutions across the country to submit their students’ data to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). This directive is essential for processing student loan applications.
The ultimatum was announced by NANS National President Lucky Emonefe on Monday, highlighting the urgency due to NELFUND’s July 12 deadline for institutions to upload the necessary data.
Emonefe expressed disappointment over the delay, emphasizing that the inability of some institutions to comply is depriving students of the opportunity to apply for the interest-free loans provided by NELFUND. He stated:
“The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS is appalled by the update from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, stating that many higher institutions have failed to upload their students’ data on the board’s portal. This comes in light of the deadline of July 12, 2024, issued by the management of NELFUND for the submission of students’ data.”
He criticized the lack of urgency from these institutions, stressing the importance of taking advantage of the loan scheme designed to support students in need. Emonefe urged the management of these institutions to prioritize the uploading of student data before the deadline to ensure that students have access to financial support for their studies.
NANS has pledged to monitor the situation closely and has warned that failure to comply within the next 48 hours will result in actions against the non-compliant institutions.
Emonefe concluded by stating that education is a fundamental right, and administrative negligence should not deny any student the opportunity to further their education.
