Protest: NBA Confirms Suleja Killings, Vows To Take Action

Written by Oryiman David Mson

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has confirmed the tragic killings during a protest in the Suleja area of Niger State and has pledged to take action.

Reports indicate that several people were killed when security operatives forcefully dispersed a crowd of protesters blocking a major road, leaving passengers trapped for hours. Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman of the Niger Police Command, initially did not confirm the deaths but mentioned the arrest of some hoodlums in a later statement.

Abdullahi Liman, Chairman of the Suleja branch of the NBA, visited the residence of one of the deceased, Yahaya Nda Isah, as directed by the national president of the NBA. Liman confirmed the death and emphasized that the NBA is gathering credible information for further action.

“The national level of the NBA has asked all the branches to constitute monitoring committees in respect of the protest,” Liman stated. He verified the death of Yahaya Nda Isah and assured that information would be relayed to the national level for appropriate measures.

Previously, the NBA had promised to provide pro bono legal services for peaceful protesters who were assaulted or intimidated during the nationwide hunger protest. NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau (SAN) directed all 130 NBA branch chairpersons across the country to monitor the protests, emphasizing the fundamental and constitutional rights of citizens to assemble and protest.
