President Bola Tinubu made headlines on Monday as he departed Abuja for Paris aboard the newly acquired Airbus A330. This aircraft has replaced the aging Boeing B737-700 (BBJ), which was purchased during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration and has been in service for 19 years.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the development in a statement shared on X. Onanuga highlighted that the decision to replace the old aircraft was not only strategic but also fiscally responsible, as the new plane was acquired at a price significantly below market value. This move is expected to save Nigeria millions of dollars in annual maintenance and fuel costs.
The replacement of the Boeing B737-700 (BBJ) was prompted by an investigative hearing in Nigeria’s parliament, which raised concerns about the plane’s safety and cost efficiency. The hearing, conducted by the Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee, recommended that the aging aircraft be retired to minimize downtime and operational expenses. The committee’s concerns were further amplified after the plane experienced a malfunction during a trip to Saudi Arabia, which underscored the urgent need for a more reliable and efficient presidential aircraft.
Onanuga emphasized that the new Airbus A330 offers significant improvements over its predecessor. “The new plane is spacious and is furnished with state-of-the-art avionics, a customized interior, and an advanced communications system,” he said. These upgrades are expected to enhance the safety, comfort, and efficiency of the President’s travels, both domestically and internationally.
President Tinubu’s use of the new Airbus A330 for his trip to France marks a significant upgrade in the Nigerian presidential fleet, reflecting a commitment to operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness in government spending.
