In a recent stakeholder meeting, the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) provided insights into why opposition parties frequently lose Local Government elections to ruling parties. Commissioner Babatunde Osibodu highlighted that a significant factor behind the consistent defeat of opposition parties is their lackluster approach to campaigning compared to ruling parties.
Osibodu explained that many opposition parties tend to resign themselves to defeat even before the election date, which results in a half-hearted campaign effort. This complacency contrasts sharply with the ruling parties, which invest considerable resources into campaigning, including the distribution of posters and grassroots mobilization.
He urged opposition parties to change their approach by actively engaging in election campaigns. This includes not only campaigning vigorously and spreading awareness about their candidates but also ensuring that they have a strong presence in all wards and polling units. He emphasized that party leaders should motivate their supporters to turn out in large numbers and cast their votes.
“Your success in Local Government elections depends heavily on how vigorously you campaign and mobilize your supporters. The ruling party’s success is due to their relentless campaigning and encouragement for their supporters to vote,” Osibodu said. “Opposition parties need to match this level of effort to have a chance at winning.”
Osibodu also stressed the importance of having party agents at polling units to ensure the integrity of the vote-counting process. This oversight can help prevent irregularities and ensure accurate results.
In addition, Engr Olabode Onatola, the former Permanent Secretary to Ogun State on Energy, supported Osibodu’s call. He urged all political parties to work together with OGSIEC to promote a transparent and credible electoral process. Onatola’s comments underscored the need for cooperation between the electoral commission and political parties to enhance the fairness and integrity of local elections.
This collaborative approach aims to address the challenges faced by opposition parties and foster a more competitive and equitable electoral environment in Ogun State.
