The Lagos State Government has announced plans to serve contravention notices to more than 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government Area. These properties were found to be illegally encroaching on government-owned land.
Affected individuals will be given a seven-day deadline to present documentation or approvals justifying their occupation of the properties. Hon. Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, the Lagos Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, revealed this following a recent inspection that uncovered 280 properties—both completed and under-construction—illegally occupying government land.
According to a statement by Dupe Ileyemi, the Director of Public Affairs, the inspection found that 208 of these properties were buildings in various stages of construction, while 72 plots remained undeveloped.
Alebiosu urged the property owners to voluntarily remove their structures before formal contravention notices are issued. He explained that the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, established in the 2000s, is divided into three sections—Parcels A, B, and C. Parcel B, currently under scrutiny, includes a mix of excisions, valid certificates of occupancy, and illegally encroached properties.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to cracking down on illegal land occupations, citing a similar enforcement effort last month in the Òkun Ajah Waterfront Scheme in the same LGA. Over 200 property owners there were also served contravention notices and given a seven-day ultimatum to provide proper documentation.
“The state government will no longer tolerate unlawful activity and encroachments on its properties. We are cleaning up Okun Ajah, and now Mayegun,” Alebiosu declared. He emphasized that the government would take necessary legal action against those failing to comply with the regulations.
