A tragic road accident at Oye-Agu Market, Abagana, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, claimed the life of an infant on Wednesday.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander for Anambra, Mrs. Joyce Alexander, confirmed the incident in Awka. She stated that the accident resulted from a brake failure, leading to a loss of control by the driver.
The lone accident involved a commercial Toyota Sienna, with registration number NEN588YX, belonging to the Transport Company of Anambra State (TRACAS), driven by Eze Uchechukwu. The vehicle reportedly veered into the market after the driver lost control, crashing into traders.
“A total of seven people, including one male adult, three female adults, and three female children, were involved in the accident,” Alexander said. “Unfortunately, one female child was killed, while the others sustained various degrees of injuries.”
The injured victims, including one male adult, three female adults, and two female children, were immediately rushed to Urban Hospital and Maternity for treatment, while the infant’s body was taken to the morgue.
The FRSC personnel visited the hospital to assess the condition of the injured victims and ensure they received proper medical attention.
Mrs. Alexander extended condolences to the family of the deceased child and advised motorists to regularly service their vehicles and adhere to road safety standards. She also cautioned market traders against displaying their wares along the roadside, urging everyone to prioritize safety on the roads.
“Drive to save your life and the lives of others on the road,” she added.
