The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has warned that the recent increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) could lead to widespread social unrest across the country. This follows the hike in petrol prices from N617 to as high as N897 per litre, which took effect on Tuesday.
In a statement signed by TUC President, Festus Osifo, the union condemned the price hike, emphasizing that it would further exacerbate poverty, especially among Nigerian workers who are already struggling with high costs of living. Osifo expressed concern that the government’s decision to raise fuel prices without engaging key stakeholders showed a lack of regard for the welfare of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class.
“The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only worsen the challenges faced by citizens, leading to increased hardship and potential social unrest,” the TUC declared.
The union demanded that the Nigerian government urgently reverse the price increase, implement policies to strengthen the naira, and take concrete actions to reduce the suffering of its citizens. The TUC also stressed the need for the government to rebuild public trust and take swift action to prevent further deterioration in living conditions.
This development follows a similar stance by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which has also called for the immediate reversal of the petrol price hike. Both unions have expressed strong opposition to the government’s approach, citing its detrimental impact on the Nigerian economy and citizens’ livelihoods.
