The Federal Government has officially inaugurated the Port Harcourt-Aba railway line for commercial train operations, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s transportation sector. Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, launched the commercial services along the 62-kilometre corridor, highlighting its role in boosting trade, enhancing mobility, and ensuring connectivity between southern and northeastern Nigeria.
The rehabilitation project, awarded to China Civil Engineering and Construction Company, includes the rehabilitation of the existing narrow gauge railway line, construction of modern stations, and procurement of new rolling stock. The railway line will connect ports such as Onne, Bonny, and Port Harcourt, facilitating efficient transportation of goods and freight through the Eastern Corridor.
Financing for the project involves the Federal Government providing 15% of the direct construction cost, while the remaining 85% will be covered by a bank loan. The commencement of operations on this rail line is expected to boost economic activities between the South-South and South-East regions, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s priorities for enhanced infrastructure and transportation.
Minister Alkali reiterated the government’s commitment to the speedy completion of the entire railway project, underscoring its significance in driving economic growth and development in the region. The inauguration of the Port Harcourt-Aba railway line heralds a new era of improved connectivity and opportunities for economic advancement in Nigeria.
