The Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to help the country overcome its current socio-economic challenges. Barau made this appeal during the inauguration of a palliative distribution program in Kano on Sunday, aimed at providing relief to his constituents across the seven states in Nigeria’s Northwest region.
Barau emphasized that the hardships Nigerians are facing are part of a global crisis and not unique to the country. He noted that during challenging times, it is important for citizens to unite and support their leaders to navigate through difficulties. He highlighted Tinubu’s efforts to mitigate the situation, including the distribution of palliatives such as assorted grains to the less privileged.
As Chairman of the Palliatives Distribution Committee for the Northwest sub-region, Barau promised to ensure the fair and equitable distribution of the items. The first phase of the exercise saw the distribution of 23,000 bags of 25kg rice to beneficiaries from local governments in Kano State.
In his remarks, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, revealed that Tinubu was dissatisfied with the previous distribution patterns of the palliatives, which led to the reconstitution of a new federal government palliative distribution committee. He also announced that Kano State would receive 70 trucks of subsidized Federal Government rice, with the distribution expected to be launched soon.
Kyari further mentioned that the Federal Government had earlier provided Kano with 90 trucks of food items and 70 trucks of fertilizer for distribution. However, the need for a more equitable and transparent process prompted the formation of a second committee to oversee the distribution of these items to ensure they reach the needy across the country.
