A total of 200 poultry farmers and 500 cassava farmers in Edo State have benefited from an empowerment programme organized by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. The initiative, which took place in Benin over the weekend, was a collaborative effort between the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Services and SANCT International Nigeria Limited.
The poultry farmers received day-old chicks, multivitamins, and cash, while the cassava farmers were provided with cassava cuttings and monetary support. This empowerment program is part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to agricultural development and food security in Nigeria.
Dr. Samuel Owoicho, the State Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the significance of this empowerment as a key milestone for both Edo State and Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized that the initiative would improve the farmers’ knowledge and skills in modern farming practices, boost productivity, and enhance their income and economic well-being.
Owoicho noted that the initiative aligns with the Ministry’s mission to promote sustainable agricultural development, improve food security, and enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. He encouraged the beneficiaries to share their newly acquired knowledge with fellow farmers, join farmer organizations and cooperatives, and leverage government support services to further transform agriculture in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Edo State, Mr. Peter Osagie, also spoke at the event. He stated that by equipping these farmers, the state is investing in its future and ensuring the continued growth of its agricultural sector. Osagie acknowledged the crucial role of farmers in the state’s economy and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting them, fostering innovation, and driving growth in the agricultural sector.
