Twenty medical students from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, who were abducted in Otukpo, Benue State, have been successfully rescued by security forces. The students were en route to Enugu for their annual Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) Convention when they were kidnapped, along with a House Officer who accompanied them.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the release of the students on Friday evening. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Sewuese Anene, shared the news with the public, stating that the students were safely recovered but declined to provide further details on the rescue operation. “The victims have been released. More details will be provided tomorrow (Saturday) morning,” Anene said.
The rescue operation came five days after the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, dispatched a tactical squad to Benue State and ordered the Commissioner of Police in Benue to relocate to Otukpo to oversee the situation. The successful rescue was reportedly carried out by a coordinated team of security operatives, led by the Office of the National Security Adviser.
This development marks a significant success in the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of citizens in the region.
