The Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) has successfully rescued another kidnap victim in Anambra State, according to a statement released by the Zonal Commander of NHFSS in the South East, ACG Mark Okonkwo, on Tuesday.
The rescue operation took place along the Nri-Enugwu-Ukwu road, between Anaocha and Njikoka Local Government Areas. This intervention occurred just weeks after the NHFSS had previously rescued two siblings from kidnappers and recovered stolen vehicles in the Nkwelle-Ezunaka area of Oyi Local Government Area.
Okonkwo detailed that the operation began after the NHFSS received a distress call at 8:00 PM on Sunday from a passer-by who witnessed individuals forcibly putting someone into a vehicle. The hunters promptly mobilized for a rescue mission based on the intel received.
Upon arrival, the NHFSS operatives encountered the kidnappers, who began firing shots to deter the rescuers. Despite the gunfire, the hunters pressed on, causing the kidnappers to flee and abandon their captive—a woman who was subsequently rescued and taken to safety. Additionally, a stolen vehicle was recovered from the scene.
Further details revealed that the hunters also recovered another vehicle that had been stolen at gunpoint along the Neni-Nimo road on August 25. Using contact information found in the vehicle’s documents, the hunters located the owner, Mr. Christian Ozonyiama from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. Ozonyiama had been carjacked by armed men disguised as vigilante operatives. Mistaking them for genuine vigilantes, he was shocked when they took his car and abandoned him on the remote road.
Okonkwo expressed gratitude towards Deputy Commander-General (Technical Services) Dr. John Metchie for his ongoing support and to Commander-General Dr. Joshua Osatimehin for his leadership and commitment to the NHFSS. His leadership has been instrumental in ensuring prompt and effective responses to rescue operations, aiming to curb criminal activities in Anambra and the broader South East zone of Nigeria.
