A 60-year-old man, Hassan Abdullahi, has been arrested by the Katsina State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly vandalizing and stealing high-tension electric wire. The arrest was made by personnel of the Funtua Division.
The NSCDC spokesperson, DSP Buhari Hamisu, confirmed the arrest on Saturday while parading the suspect. Hamisu revealed that Abdullahi, a resident of Lasanawa village in Maska, Funtua Local Government Area, had climbed high-tension electric poles on the outskirts of the village on August 28, 2024, to steal wires and other electrical components.
Abdullahi reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation and disclosed that he had packed various stolen items into bags, intending to sell them to scrap dealers in Funtua town. However, two dealers refused to purchase the stolen goods.
The items recovered from the suspect include angle irons, channel irons, pension clamps, straps, isolator handles, scattered disc insulators, adaptor sockets, bolts and nuts, J-hucks, spindles, electric aluminum conductors, spanners, pinches, and iron rods.
Hamisu stated that Abdullahi will be charged to court once investigations are completed. He also urged the public to remain law-abiding and reassured that the command is dedicated to eradicating the activities of vandals and other criminals in the state.
