On September 5, 2024, the historic town of Badagry in Lagos State saw a significant event as Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, led an Awareness Walk through the town. This initiative, organized by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), was aimed at promoting the upcoming 24th National Women’s Conference (NWC) themed “Soar Beyond Boundaries… Enrich Communities.”
The Awareness Walk, which started at the First Storey Building and proceeded to the Agia Tree before concluding at the Vlekete Slave Market, highlighted Badagry’s rich historical landmarks. Dr. Sanwo-Olu was joined by Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor’s wife, and Prof. Olufunke Adeyeye, Chairperson of the 2024 NWC Planning Committee. Their efforts were focused on engaging with the women of Badagry and generating excitement for the conference scheduled for September 10th and 11th, 2024.
During the walk, Dr. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of recognizing and honoring women who have made significant impacts in their communities. Drawing inspiration from the biblical figure Esther, she praised Badagry’s women for their resilience and dedication.

“The enthusiasm from Badagry’s residents reinforced our message of empowerment, unity, and collective growth,” Dr. Sanwo-Olu remarked.
The First Lady also expressed her appreciation for the support from local leaders, including Hon. Adeniran Olusegun Onilude, Chairman of Badagry Local Government, and Hon. Gbenu Joseph, Chairman of Badagry West LCDA. Special thanks were given to Ovi Manuel Kuponu II for moderating the session at the First Storey Building.
In addition, the COWLSO delegation visited two prominent Badagry matriarchs: Mrs. Cecilia Modupe Whenu, widow of the former Chairman of Badagry Local Government, and Alhaja Kikelomo Ladipo, the current Apex Women Leader. Both women were recognized for their long-standing contributions to women’s empowerment and human rights.
Alhaja Ladipo expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I am humbled and thankful to Her Excellency and COWLSO for this honor. It reflects the hard work of the women of Badagry, and I am committed to continuing our efforts for their empowerment.”
Mrs. Cecilia Modupe Whenu added, “This visit is a poignant reminder of my late husband’s legacy. I urge Your Excellency to explore more opportunities for Badagry’s youth, who are the future leaders of our community. With your support, we can make a meaningful difference in their lives.”
