Officer Slain in Petrol Bomb Attack on Anambra Police Divisional Headquarters

Written by Oryiman David Mson

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Anambra State, a police corporal lost his life when gunmen launched a violent attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and the Oba Civic Centre. The assailants, suspected to be members of an armed secessionist group, stormed the facilities in the early hours of Tuesday, September 3, 2024, hurling petrol bombs that set parts of the buildings ablaze and leaving the community in fear.

The spokesman for the Anambra Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the details of the attack in a press statement, highlighting the severity of the assault. According to SP Ikenga, the attack began with the gunmen firing sporadically at the police station in an attempt to breach its defences. The situation quickly escalated when the attackers threw petrol bombs at the station and the adjacent Oba Civic Centre, igniting fires that caused significant damage to the structures.

The situation was dire as officers on duty, alongside a joint security response team, struggled to contain the flames and repel the attackers. Despite their efforts, one police corporal, whose identity has not yet been released, was fatally wounded during the confrontation. SP Ikenga expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the officer “paid the supreme price” in the line of duty, attempting to protect the community and his fellow officers.

In the aftermath of the attack, a massive joint security operation has been launched in Oba and its surrounding areas. This operation is led by the Nigeria Police Force and includes the Nigerian Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies. Their primary objective is to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further incidents of violence. The coordinated response reflects the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the attack and their determination to restore security in the region.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, issued a stern condemnation of the attack, describing it as “an assault on the nation’s soul.” He emphasized that such acts of violence are not just attacks on the police force but on the fabric of the nation itself, aimed at destabilizing peace and security. CP Itam vowed that those responsible for the heinous act would be brought to justice, and he called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces as they work to restore order.

The attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters is the latest in a series of violent incidents targeting security forces in the southeastern region of Nigeria. These attacks are often attributed to secessionist movements and other armed groups who have intensified their activities in recent years, posing significant challenges to law enforcement and the broader security apparatus. The increasing frequency and intensity of these attacks have raised concerns about the stability of the region and the safety of its residents.

In response to these growing threats, the Anambra State government has been working closely with security agencies to strengthen the state’s defence capabilities. This includes deploying additional security personnel to vulnerable areas, increasing surveillance, and enhancing coordination between different branches of the security forces. Despite these efforts, incidents like the attack on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters underscore the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in maintaining peace and security in the state.

The death of the police corporal in this latest attack has drawn widespread condemnation from across the state and beyond. Community leaders, government officials, and citizens have expressed their outrage at the senseless violence and their sympathy for the family of the fallen officer. Many have called for greater support for the police and other security forces, recognizing the difficult and often dangerous work they do to protect the public.

As investigations into the attack continue, the focus will be on tracking down the perpetrators and preventing future incidents. The authorities have urged anyone with information related to the attack to come forward, promising that all leads will be thoroughly investigated. The hope is that swift and decisive action will not only bring justice for the slain officer but also deter future attacks and restore a sense of security in the region.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria and the risks faced by those who stand on the front lines. The fallen corporal’s sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the dangers inherent in the work of law enforcement officers, who often put their lives on the line to maintain peace and order.
