The Federal Government is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders on Monday to address the 21-day strike notice issued by the union.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, revealed this during a press briefing in Abuja, marking his one year in office. ASUU’s strike notice stems from unresolved issues such as revitalization funds for public universities, payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, and the release of withheld salaries.
According to Prof. Mamman, letters of invitation have been sent to ASUU leadership and other relevant organizations. He noted that many of ASUU’s concerns are already being addressed, including the issue of exiting the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which has been resolved by the President, though bureaucratic delays have slowed implementation.
Expressing optimism about the upcoming meeting, Mamman stated, “By the time we meet on Monday, some of these issues will be discussed and resolved.” He also assured that President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring academic stability and will provide the necessary support to prevent disruptions in education.
Mamman highlighted that ASUU’s demands date back to 1981 and have been a recurring challenge for successive governments. However, he emphasized the current government’s commitment to finding a lasting solution, stating, “We will do everything possible to make sure we don’t go on strike.”
