The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2024. The results were made available to candidates on Monday, August 12, 2024.

WAEC shared the announcement via a post on X, stating, “The West African Examinations Council is pleased to inform candidates who sat WASSCE for school candidates, 2024 that the result has officially been released today, Monday, August 12, 2024.”

WAEC’s Success and Performance Overview

Amos Dangut, WAEC’s Head of Nigeria Organisation, emphasized the success of the examination, marking it as the first conducted under his tenure. In his Monday statement, Dangut expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the 2024 WASSCE, despite the challenges faced.

How to Check Your 2024 WAEC Results: A Step-by-Step Guide

“Gentlemen of the media, the conduct of the WASSCE for school candidates, 2024, the first conducted under my administration, was a huge success. Meanwhile, after my assumption of office, WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2023-Second Series and the novel computer-based WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024-First Series were successfully conducted,” Dangut said.

Results Statistics

The 2024 WASSCE saw a total of 1,805,216 candidates registering for the exam. Out of these, 1,685,889 results were released, accounting for 93.9% of the total candidates. Among the released results:
• 1,332,089** candidates (73.7%) obtained credits in at least five subjects, including either Mathematics or English Language.
• 1,301,949 candidates (72.9%) achieved credits in five subjects, including both Mathematics and English Language.

However, there was a 7.6% decrease in performance compared to the 2023 WASSCE. Additionally, 215,267 results (11.92%) were withheld due to examination malpractice.

Examination Conduct and Challenges

The 2024 WASSCE spanned a period of seven weeks and six days, from April 30 to June 24, 2024. The coordination of examiners and the marking of scripts took place from July 10 to July 29 across 86 traditional marking venues nationwide.

Dangut highlighted several challenges encountered during the examination:
1. Security Concerns: Issues related to the safety of examination venues and personnel.
2. Non-Adherence to Registration Deadlines: Delays and issues with candidate registration.
3. Financial Issues/Inflation: Economic factors impacting the conduct of the examination.
4. Rogue Website Operators: Problems with unauthorized websites and fraudulent practices by some supervisors.

Conclusion

The release of the 2024 WASSCE results marks a significant milestone for students and the examination body. Despite facing numerous challenges, WAEC has successfully conducted and processed the results. Students are advised to check their results promptly using the official WAEC result checker website or via SMS.
