Chelsea is investigating a video posted by midfielder Enzo Fernandez on social media that the French Football Federation (FFF) alleges contains racist content.
In the video, Fernandez and some of his Argentina teammates are seen chanting a derogatory song about the France team during an Instagram live session following Argentina’s Copa America victory over Colombia. The FFF has described the song as “racist and discriminatory.”
Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate, Wesley Fofana, reposted the video on social media with the caption: “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.”
The FFF announced it will file a legal complaint over the “racially offensive and discriminatory remarks” made by the Argentina players.Fernandez has since apologized on Instagram for posting the video and for any offense it may have caused. He stated:
“The song includes highly offensive language, and there is absolutely no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I am truly sorry.”
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea is currently investigating the incident.
