Benue Entertainment Industry To Be More Valuable

Written by Oryiman David Mson

Welcome to Benue, a captivating region where the rhythmic beats of the Tiv, the melodious tunes of the Idoma, the vibrant dances of the Igede, and the enchanting performances of the Etulo and Abakwa tribes intertwine to create a symphony of artistic brilliance. In this land of many talents, each tribe brings its unique flavor to the cultural mosaic, enriching our collective identity and inspiring creativity at every turn.

Today, we shine a light on a critical issue that’s been brewing within our entertainment scene: regionalization as a self-inflicted challenge. While our diverse culture and traditions are our greatest assets, sometimes our actions inadvertently hinder the growth and prosperity of Benue’s entertainment industry. Let’s dive deeper into this self-inflicted dilemma:

Challenges Faced by Benue’s Entertainment Industry

1. Internal Fragmentation: Within Benue’s entertainment sector, there’s often a tendency towards internal fragmentation based on ethnic, linguistic, or cultural lines. This fragmentation can lead to a lack of unity and collaboration, preventing the industry from presenting a cohesive front to external audiences and investors.

2. Limited Collaboration: Building on the issue of fragmentation, the reluctance or inability to collaborate across different cultural and artistic groups within Benue further exacerbates regionalization. By failing to leverage the collective talents and resources of our diverse communities, we inadvertently limit the industry’s potential for growth and recognition.

3. Lack of Strategic Planning: Another self-inflicted wound is the absence of long-term strategic planning and vision within Benue’s entertainment sector. Without clear goals and a roadmap for development, the industry struggles to overcome the challenges posed by regionalization and capitalize on emerging opportunities.

4. Dependency on Outsiders: In some cases, a dependency on outsiders for funding, promotion, and distribution can contribute to the perpetuation of regionalization. By relying solely on external entities, we relinquish control over our creative endeavors and risk reinforcing stereotypes and biases about Benue’s entertainment industry.

5. Resistance to Change: Lastly, resistance to change and innovation can impede progress within Benue’s entertainment sector. Whether due to fear of disrupting established norms or reluctance to embrace new technologies and trends like TikTok challenges and Twitter hashtags, this resistance stifles creativity and limits the industry’s ability to adapt to evolving audience preferences.

The Way forward

1. Promote Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Encourage artists, filmmakers, musicians, and performers from different ethnic groups within Benue to collaborate on projects. Organize workshops, networking events, and creative collaborations to foster unity and cooperation across cultural lines. By working together, artists can create compelling content that appeals to a broader audience while celebrating the diversity of Benue’s cultural heritage.

2. Establish a Unified Platform: Create a centralized platform or organization that serves as a hub for Benue’s entertainment industry. This platform can facilitate communication, collaboration, and resource-sharing among artists, producers, promoters, and other industry stakeholders. By providing a unified space for networking and promotion, the platform can help break down barriers and promote inclusivity within the industry.

3. Invest in Infrastructure and Resources: Advocate for increased investment in infrastructure and resources to support the growth of Benue’s entertainment industry. This includes funding for performance venues, recording studios, film production facilities, and digital distribution platforms. By improving access to essential resources, artists can produce high-quality content and reach wider audiences both within and beyond Benue.

4. Support Local Talents: Prioritize support for local artists, musicians, filmmakers, and performers within Benue’s entertainment sector. Establish funding programs, grants, and scholarships specifically designed to nurture and empower homegrown talent. Provide opportunities for local artists to showcase their work at festivals, exhibitions, and events both within Benue and on national and international platforms. By investing in and championing local talent, the industry can cultivate a thriving creative ecosystem that celebrates the unique voices and perspectives of Benue’s diverse communities.

5. Develop Long-Term Strategic Plans: Work with industry stakeholders to develop long-term strategic plans and initiatives for the growth and development of Benue’s entertainment sector. These plans should outline clear goals, priorities, and action steps for addressing the challenges of regionalization and promoting sustainable growth. By taking a proactive approach to planning and development, the industry can overcome obstacles and seize new expansion opportunities.

6. Promote Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Encourage entrepreneurship and innovation within Benue’s entertainment industry by supporting emerging artists, filmmakers, and entrepreneurs. Provide training, mentorship, and funding opportunities to help aspiring talent turn their creative ideas into successful businesses and ventures. By fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, the industry can adapt to changing trends and stay competitive in the global market.

7. Educate and Advocate: Raise awareness about the importance of combating regionalization and promoting inclusivity within Benue’s entertainment industry. Organize educational workshops, seminars, and public campaigns to highlight the benefits of collaboration, diversity, and cultural exchange. Advocate for policies and initiatives that support the growth and sustainability of the local entertainment sector, both at the grassroots level and among government officials and policymakers.
