In response to mounting security threats and environmental concerns, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced the suspension of all mining activities within the state. The suspension will remain in effect until comprehensive data on miners has been compiled, as instructed by the governor.
The decision to halt mining operations stems from Governor Alia’s deep concerns over the adverse effects of mining on the environment, particularly the contamination of water sources in affected areas like Kwande. The governor stressed the need to prioritize the well-being of residents and protect them from further harm.
To address these issues, Governor Alia has directed the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to swiftly initiate the process of documenting information on all miners operating within Benue State. This revalidation exercise aims to gather essential data that will inform future decisions regarding mining activities in the state.
