Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, announced that the construction of rural roads in the state is set to begin soon. The governor made this revelation at Saint Gerald’s Majella Cathedral, Katsina-Ala, during a requiem mass in honor of his late maternal uncle, Chief Abu King Shuluwa.
Governor Alia stated that the 16 township roads, initially approved and already in advanced construction stages, will be fully completed by April. Subsequently, the focus will shift to addressing transportation challenges faced by people, particularly farmers, in conveying their produce to markets through the initiation of rural road construction.
He disclosed that major highways, including Makurdi-Gboko, Yandev-Ugbema-Katsina Ala, Yandev-Buruku crossing point, and Kastina Ala-Wukari, have been incorporated into the federal government’s 2024 budget. Governor Alia emphasized his commitment to pressuring the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, to commence work on these vital road projects.
The governor paid tribute to the late Chief Shuluwa, describing him as a man of peace who made sacrifices and significantly impacted lives. He urged careful and fair selection for the replacement of vacant positions among the First and Second class Chiefs, stressing that these choices would shape the development of the region.
Governor Alia issued a warning against illegal activities and security breaches in the area, reiterating his promise to develop the state for the well-being of its citizens and to facilitate business operations.
Tor Tiv, Prof James Iorzua Ayatse, represented by Tor Kwande, Ambrose Iortyer, called for unity and prayers for the state’s betterment. He emphasized respect for authorities, love, integrity, transparency, and due process in selecting leaders.
Bishop Isaac Dugu of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala urged collaboration among traditional leaders and stakeholders to end banditry, kidnappings, and criminality in the region. He expressed regret over the deaths of Chief Abu King Shuluwa and Chief Fezanga Wombo, urging the Tor Tiv, King Makers, and the Governor to ensure that successors uphold integrity and fear of God.
The late Chief Abu King Shuluwa, born in 1946, passed away on January 16th, 2024. The event drew encomiums from various dignitaries, including former Governor Gabriel Suswam, senators, traditional rulers, family members, and well-wishers within and outside the state.
